Smoke Bomb Wedding Photography Ideas // Alternative Wedding Photography
So I absolutely love a good smoke bomb! Smoke bomb wedding photography is awesome! I think they give a great colour pop to your images, and they can be a lot of fun too! I always get lots of questions about smoke bombs and how they work, so I’ve decided to write a blog post about them.
What to do if you want Smoke Bombs at your wedding?
First and foremost, confirm with your venue if they allow them. Some venues will not allow them, as they are a form of pyrotechnic. If you want to do Smoke Bombs in a public area you need to get the correct permission to use them. As they are a form of pyrotechnic it also means you can’t fly with them!
It is your responsibility (not the photographer’s) to ensure you have taken all the correct safety measures before using the smoke bombs. You will need to consider crowds and highly flammable areas. Bring a metal bucket to drop used smoke bombs and a bottle of water to make sure they’re fully extinguished. You should be in an open area outdoors and avoid any areas that are overly dry and susceptible to catching fire.
Your photographer may refuse to shoot your smoke bomb picture if they feel the situation is not safe. E.g. people are too drunk, not a safe location, not suitable equipment to dispose of them.
Do smoke bombs stain?
There is a risk of them staining dresses and fabrics etc and they do get very hot. When you set off the smoke bomb there are a few sparks which can also burn if you aren’t careful.
I’ve never had any issues yet but I do know people who have so I like to make you aware of this before you buy them.
If you are 2-3 feet away and just standing in the smoke cloud, it should not stain your clothing. They can stain the ground though if left on their sides, so ensure they are placed upright.
Tell your Photographer in advance!
Make sure you tell your photographer well in advance if you’re planning on doing them! They can help you prepare and suggest the best places to do photos with them.
Where can I buy smoke bombs?
I always recommend buying the Enola Gaye Wire Pull Smoke Greandes because they burn cool, not hot. Plus, these smoke bombs are all non-toxic smoke with a fully biodegradable body.
The best place to buy them from is just paintball. They have a great youtube video on their site too explaining how to use them.

- Decide if you want to hold them or have them in the background
